Nordplus 2026 / Ruotsi

A Preparatory Visit from Sweden

In January 2026 a preparatory visit from Forsmark was made to Eurajoen yhteiskoulu as part of our Nordplus cooperation.

A teacher and leisure leader from Vattenfallgymnasiet (Forsmark, Sweden) visited a twin school in Eurajoki, Finland. The aim was to observe common background and collaborate on a scale Nordplus Junior project, which will enable student exchanges, shared STEM learning and long-term cooperation between schools, who are located in nuclear power plant municipalities.

During the visit, partners followed everyday school life at Eurajoen yhteiskoulu, observed lessons at both lower and upper secondary levels and discussed curricula, teaching practices and methods, community work and well-being with staff and students. A full day was spent at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant site, where the visitors learned in detail how educational cooperation with power plant operators TVO and Posiva is embedded in teaching from grade 7 onwards. The visit included the Posiva laboratories, the VLJ final disposal facility and the Olkiluoto Visitor Center, mirroring the learning paths of Eurajoki students.

Johan Thun, Physics, Mathematics and Technology teacher, Vattenfallgymnasiet (Sweden):

“It was particularly impressive to see how Eurajoki students work with real data, laboratories and industry experts already from grade 7. The cooperation with TVO and Posiva became a natural part of the curriculum. This visit gave us many concrete ideas for student projects, study visits and exchanges that we can realistically implement between our schools”.

Sini Nieminen, English teacher, Eurajoen yhteiskoulu (Finland):

“The preparatory visit confirmed that Eurajoki and Forsmark share similar geographical conditions of the nuclear energy neighbourhood, which leads to similar educational challenges and opportunities for growth. Exploring how Vattenfallgymnasiet supports students living on campus and focuses on energy and technology education helped us define clear goals for our Nordplus project, especially in developing STEM teaching, language skills and student-to-student learning. We are looking forward to visit Forsmark in spring, building a holistic capacity for our cooperation”.

The programme also included planning meetings for the upcoming Nordplus Junior class exchange application, as well as cultural experiences in Rauma and winter swimming in the ice-covered Gulf of Bothnia - strengthening both professional and personal connections.

This preparatory visit was supported by the Nordplus Junior programme.
