My mother 1. was invited by her aunt and uncle to stay for a few days at the famous haunted house. (kutsuttiin) There her uncle told her: "You 2. have been given a special gift to see and hear things that ordinary people miss.” (on annettu) He believed that the secrets of the house 3. would be revealed to my mother. (paljastettaisiin (reveal))
The next morning her aunt and uncle went to town and my mother decided to go for a swim. As they left, uncle turned and said, "You 4. will be surprised at what happens, while we are away." (tulet yllättymään)
My mother went for a swim, and when she returned her towel 5. had been stolen. (oli varastettu) Or maybe it 6. had been taken by a bird? (oli viety)
She went back in to watch some TV. Almost immediately she heard some weird noise in the hall. It was like the sound of a wooden stick that 7. was used to knock a door. (käytettiin) My mother opened the door, but there was nobody there. When she turned, she saw an old lady with a walking stick standing in front of her holding her towel. “This 8. must be washed”, she said and turned to the stairs. (täytyy pestä) Then she took a few steps and turned back to my mother. “9. Are we being followed?” (seurataanko meitä) My mother shook her head and followed the old lady.
My mother couldn’t believe her eyes. “Maybe this is some joke and 10. I am being laughed at”, she thought and looked around. (minulle nauretaan) When she looked back up, the old lady had disappeared. My mother didn’t know what to do, so she went back to watch TV.

She fell asleep and 11. was woken up by the sound of her aunt and uncle coming back. (heräsi) She told them what had happened and her uncle was happy to hear that the old lady 12. had been seen by my mother as well. (oli nähty) The story 13. has been told to every visitor, except for one thing. (on kerrottu) When my mother told her uncle that she had seen the old lady, she didn’t really tell a lie. It all depends on what 14. is meant by seeing. (tarkoitetaan) My mother did see her; in her dreams. She had fallen asleep and had dreamt the whole thing. The only thing she couldn’t explain was the towel. It 15. had been brought inside while she was asleep. (oli tuotu)
