Vimpelin lukio (Vimpeli senior high school)
Vimpelin lukio is a co-educational school providing secondary education with an academic leaning to students from 16 to 19 years of age. The curriculum of Vimpelin lukio follows nationally approved general goals. Vimpelin lukio has a special emphasis on sports (at the moment Finnish baseball and basketball). Like other senior high schools in Finland, Vimpelin lukio is a municipal high school subsidized by the Government. At the beginning of the autumn term of 2019 there are about 80 students. Some courses (Russian, French) are carried out via distance learning, ie students follow teaching and participate in it with the help of a video conference connection.
The school year is divided into six periods, each of them lasting about 6 weeks. The total number of school days is 190. School starts around the 9th of August, is followed by a week`s holiday in October and the autumn term usually ends on December 21st. The spring term starts on the first week of January, with a week`s holiday in March and the term ends on the first week in June.
Most courses are graded with a number scale from 4 to 10 (4 equals to fail, 10 being the best mark), while other courses are simply graded either pass or fail.
It takes from 2 and a half years to 4 years to pass the Finnish high school. During this time students must pass at least 75 courses in different subjects. Each course consists of 36 lessons of 45 minutes, homework and an exam at the end of the course. Some of the courses (Finnish, English, Swedish, Mathematics, Physics, History, Geography, Biology, Music, Visual Arts, Physical Education, Chemistry, Religion, and Philosophy) are compulsory, while others (German, French, Russian, Psychology, Advanced Mathematics, Photography, Planning sounds and lights, Dance and choreography, Drama, and Communication) are optional. It is also possible to study a course independently, without teacher instruction. At the end of their studies students take part in the matriculation exam at least in four compulsory subjects. The matriculation exam is a national exam, ie. all Finnish high school students have the same exams.
Passing the matriculation exam is a precondition for seeking academic education in most cases. In addition, universities normally have admission tests when accepting new students.
