ENK11 Taneli

ENK11 - Literature and Creative Writing Instuctions

During the course you will read two (2) books from different genres, at least 200 pages each, and one (1) short story of at least 2500 words. To complete the study unit, you must do five written tasks (list and instructions below), four of which are based on the novels and short story you read. The first task (reading diary) you must do with both novels you read, but with the rest you may decide which task you will do about which book.

You may work through the academic year 2026 – 2027 and you may set your own deadlines. I suggest you try to finish at least one book & written task per period. However, the final deadline for all tasks is May 1, 2027.

The choice of books to read is entirely up to you, but once you do decide what to read let me know what you have picked.

You can hand out the written tasks one by one as you complete them, or all at once if you wish. Remember to identify your work, write down your name and group in every task. Return the completed task to peda.net assignment folders (ENK11 Taneli).

Written tasks:

  1. Reading Diary
    • Lukiessasi kirjoita suomeksi lukupäiväkirjaa, jokaisesta kirjasta/novellista erikseen, esim. aina neljänneksen luettuasi. Pohdi erityisesti vieraan kielen oppimista, sanaston karttumista, kieliopin ymmärtämistä ym. vieraan kielen opiskeluun liittyvää:
      • Lukeminen – Miltä lukeminen tuntuu? Mikä on vaikeaa, mikä helppoa? Miten reagoit uusiin vieraan kielen sanoihin?
½ - 1 sivua/kirja.
  1. Composition 1
    • Choose a theme from the book (courage, tolerance, friendship, etc.) and based on the book, discuss your views on the theme. Write 700-1300 characters. Give a heading to your text.
  1. Composition 2
    • Choose a scene from the book in which the protagonist is actively involved. Describe the scene briefly. Then discuss whether you would have acted the same way or not in a similar situation and why. Write 700-1300 characters. Give a heading to your text.
  1. Review of one of the two novels (separate instructions, 2-3 pages)
  1. A short story of your own
    • No hard character limit but keep it under 10 pages total.

Book Review

Collecting Ideas

Fill in these points based on the book you have read. You don’t have to include all the points in your review but considering them during the planning stage might be helpful.

  • Preliminary information

Title

Year of publication

Author

Genre

  • Summary
Issues/themes

Plot (be very brief)

Setting (time and place)

Main characters

  • Evaluation

What were your first impression after reading the work? Why?

Which character could you most identify with? Why?

How plausible were the characters?

What was your favourite part? Why?

What feelings did the book evoke?

What was the atmosphere like?

Who was it written for?

What was the purpose of the work?

Who would you recommend the book to?

What was the language like?

How difficult or easy was it follow?

What would you have done differently?

Getting organized

There are many ways to organize your review but it’s best to be logical and deal with one topic in one paragraph. Another very common way to organize a review in to start with preliminary information and finish with evaluation. Here is one example of paragraph division:

  • Preliminary information (in a box) such as the title, author, genre, year of publication
  • An opening paragraph to get the reader’s attention. You might find it easier to write it last when you have finished the whole review.
  • Summary of the plot and description of the main character. Be brief and don’t spoil important plot points.
  • This will account for most of your review, so multiple paragraphs. Remember to give reasons and examples (quotations/extracts from the book are very useful as well) to illustrate your point.

The best structure is that you write one page about the first three points above. The rest (1-2 pages) should be the analysis/evaluation of the book and discussion of your views on the questions in the previous page.

Short Story

Write a short story of your own. You may decide the genre, setting, characters, tone, and everything else about the story yourself. It might be helpful to put together a plan for your story before you start writing.

Things you may wish to consider before writing include:
-The plot
1. Opening - Start your story with an interesting main character and decide where the story is going to take place.
2. Build up - What is going to happen in your story? Add in some problems or a mystery to solve.
3. Problem - Pick what problem your main character is going to have to overcome. Maybe a dragon or an evil wizard is causing problems in the town?
4. Resolution - How does your character deal with the problem? How will they solve it?
5. Ending - What happens to your character? You could add an unexpected twist!

-Setting
Where and when is your story set? Is it our world, or a fictional world of your own creation? Is it set in the present day, in the past, or in the future?

-Characters
Who are your main and side characters?
What are they like? Their personalities, past, desires, goals, faults, etc.?
Does your story have a villain?

-Conflict(s)
What is the main conflict of your story, i.e. what is the driving force pushing your main character(s) forward? Why are they doing what they are doing?

Themes
What is the story about?
What is its underlying message to the reader?

Your story doesn't need to have all of these things, and it can have aspects not included here, but these questions are a good place to start.

There is no hard character limit, but do keep the story under ten pages long (A4).
