I first got the idea of becoming a peacekeeper when I ? ATTENDED a course in my upper secondary school.

Our training gave us a good ? FOUNDATION for future deployment to mission areas

After a year's service, I got the call I'd been waiting for,"Hey! How'd you like to go to Afghanistan next spring?" I considered the ? NOTION carefully for the full extent of three seconds before agreeing.

"I'm really going to Afghanistan..." I thought a week later as I sat at my dinner table. My guts ? WRENCHED. I was sweating. I had really done it. I had agreed to go, ? VOLUNTARILY, to an active war zone.

It took me three more sleepless nights and a lot of thinking, until I came to the ? CONCLUSION that I had made the right choice.

I knew what motivated me. I knew why I had responded with such ? HASTE. I wanted to help. I wanted to ? MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Part 2

9 to deal successfully with a difficult situation or a person in a difficult situation
10 the uniform worn by soldiers when fighting
11 make available for use; supply; give
12 in my opinion
13 the movement of troops or equipment to a place or position for military action
14 whatever difficulties may occur
15 a relationship between people or groups based on shared feelings, interests, or experiences
16 To force, press, or squeeze (something) into an insufficient or barely sufficient space
17 very hot, burning, sweltering
18 to keep or cultivate with care and affection
19 a great liking for someone or something
20 to return something to an earlier good condition or position

In addition to my training at the Rapid ? DEPLOYMENT Forces, I had gone through two weeks of signals training in Sweden and three weeks of general training in Finland for the mission.

Those people [over 50 other peacekeepers] were, and still are, the main reason I remember the days on mission with such ? FONDNESS.

When people go on a peacekeeping mission together, they will form a very special ? BOND, as that is the only way to ? COPE WITH such a massive change in your regular life.

You ? CHERISH the moments alone, but you also enjoy the moments you ? CRAMMED a five-person sauna with the seven smelly people you had just finished a five-day patrol with.

You knew they had your back, ? COME HELL OR HIGH WATER.

? AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED, the main purpose of peacekeeping is to ? PROVIDE the people of the crisis area WITH a chance. A chance for them, not us, to rebuild their homes and their country. A chance for them to ? RE-ESTABLISH their lives and live without the fear of being killed.

I got to speak with young girls who wished to become lawyers, doctors and teachers. They had hope, and that hope made every day spent in over fifty degrees of ? SCORCHING sunshine wearing full ? COMBAT GEAR worthwhile.

Part 3

21 to take physical control or possession of (something) suddenly or forcibly
22 the state of being successful and having a lot of money
23 pros and cons; benefits and drawbacks; good and bad sides
24 existing as a natural and permanent quality of something or someone
25 make smaller or less in amount, degree, or size
26 something that you do to help produce or develop something
27 keep in an existing state; preserve from failure or decline
28 lasting or intended to last or remain unchanged indefinitely
29 to get (something wanted or valued)
30 back to where one started, with no progress having been made

The time that's passed has taught me about both ? THE ADVANTAGES AND THE DISADVANTAGES of peacekeeping.

It's definitely not always heroic. I saw the US-led mission ? REDUCE its troops in Afghanistan and the Taliban ? TAKE HOLD OF many of the areas for which we had fought so hard to ? MAINTAIN.

Most of the work we had done had gone ? BACK TO SQUARE ONE, and would have to be done all over again if any ? PERMANENT change was to be achieved.

I believe we are capable of good and can provide hope to the people in the crisis areas of the world, provided we are willing to step out of our bubble of ? PROSPERITY.

During my years as a peacekeeper, I have ? GAINED amazing friends, a wider view of the world and a belief in the ? INHERENT goodness of humankind.

I can only hope that my small ? CONTRIBUTION for peace has given someone a chance at a better future.
