National and international artificial intelligence projects at JYK

AI+ EU

The first international AI project for our school is AI+ EU, which is a multilateral project coordinated by the University of A Coruña in Spain, which has collected a group of secondary school partners from all around Europe (Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Lithuania, Finland). The aim of this AI project is to create a common European AI curriculum for secondary schools.

The project was badly hit by COVID-19 pandemic, and we were forced to stop all travelling. No in-person student workshops for all the partner schools have been implemented. Our task in Joensuu has mainly been to assess the teaching material sent to us by the university. You'll find all the original TUs (teaching units) meant for students in the folder on this Pedanet page.

We started the project in 2019 with some simple exercises on code.org, then did some tutorials on MIT App inventor and then proceeded to creating our own apps on MIT App Inventor, following the instructions of the teaching units sent to us. The teaching units deal with different aspects of understanding AI and machine learning, for example perception, reasoning, learning etc. The latest teaching unit dealt with the ethics side of artificial intelligence, and it is most likely what our school will be focusing on next year because we are less math/science/technology oriented than the other secondary schools involved. The other schools will focus more on robotics and coding in the months that follow. Hopefully, we get to travel with and without the students in the near future, too.

The first national AI project our school participated in, FinEduAI, is slowly drawing to a close
. It has been a co-op project between four Finnish upper secondary schools with coordinators, teachers and students from all the schools. The main goal of the project has been to familiarise the students (and the schools) with the concept of artificial intelligence and its many applications, as well as to collect and analyse some data (measurements with different types of sensors, both nutrition and health related measurements).
