15. Protecting your hearing

Sensory cells make you hear sounds

The ears are your auditory organs. Their cochleas contain sensitive sensory cells. These cells make it possible for you to hear sounds.

Loud or continuous noises can damage the structure of these sensory cells. Because this damage can last for the rest of your life, you should protect your hearing.

How to protect your hearing?

Noise disturbances
Loud and continuous noises damage your hearing. They can also make you irritated and unable to concentrate.

Harmful noise
A noise is harmful, if you have to shout in order for others to hear you over it. Even shouting in another person's ear is harmful. Technically, all noises with a volume of over 85 decibels (dB) are harmful.

Protecting yourself from noise
The best way to protect yourself from loud and harmful noises is to stay away from them altogether. Harmful can also be reduced by applying noise-damping plates and fixtures to walls and ceilings. There are also all kinds of wearable hearing protectors available. If you encounter a loud noise, you should cover your ears with your hands.

Woodworking
In woodworking class, always remember to use headphones. The noise made by saws and electric machinery can often rise above 85 decibels.

Small machinery
Always wear hearing protection when using loud, small machinery. Such machinery includes lawn mowers, leaf blowers and motorsaws.

Concert
Always wear hearing protection in loud concert settings.

Headphones
When you listen to music with headphones, make sure that the volume of the music does not get too loud. The use of headphones is more damaging to your hearing than the use of speakers. This is why you should not wear headphones all day.

Hearing and vision protection are essential pieces of equipment in many professions.
