Kauhava High School
Kauhava High School consists of 170 students and about 20 teachers. The predecessor of Kauhava High School was Kauhava Middle School, which was founded in 1921. Today our high school is located in a brand new school at Jylhäntie 14.
Kauhava High School is a versatile general high school, which provides a good ground for further education in universities and polytechnics. About 90 per cent of our graduates will enter academic education, which is an outstanding achievement even on the national level.
Kauhava High School is specialized in entrepreneurship, international projects, and in the ‘fascination of creativity’, which is a study entity, consisting of different forms of art and crafts.
We got our spark of entrepreneurship when participating in a national entrepreneur network Y-Love with 22 other high schools. A high school student can choose three optional courses of entrepreneurship from a basic course to producing an event. Working in the same building with Suomen Yrittäjäopisto (The Entrepreneur College of Finland) brings our students more possibilities to advance entrepreneurship. In the future it is possible for our students to choose five optional courses of entrepreneurship.
We have participated in numerous international projects since year 2000. During these projects our students have visited London, Rome, St Petersburg, Prague, Berlin and Santiago de Compostela, just to mention a few. During 2013-2015 we were working on a Comenius project called ‘Different Cultures on European Stage, in which seven European countries were participating. During 2018-2021 we were the coordinator school of Erasmus+ -project Drops of Life. Kauhavan lukio has also begun to establish relations with a few Chinese high schools with a preliminary visit to Qingdao in 2019 and we hope to strengthen the ties to China in the near future.
We have been busy hosting quite a few exchange students since the 1970s, and in return, our students have been exchange students all over the world. To support the idea of being an internationally oriented high school, it’s possible to study Swedish, English, Spanish, German and Russian in our school.
Creativity, art and performing arts have become increasingly important in our school. We offer creative courses like Blue Pen, Fascination of Movies, Song Factory, Let’s Dance and Photography. Dance courses, which have especially appealed to girls, have been very popular for a long time. The students’ dance performances are shown at school festivities and celebrations.
We are a strongly network-oriented high school. We belong to a provincial Opinlakeus-network, which consists of all the secondary schools of the province. In addition, we belong to a nationwide Mobiluck-network, consisting of six high schools, which has brought mobile technology to the students’ school work.
It’s possible to complete a diploma in dance, music, physical education, literature and art in Kauhava High School.
Kauhava High School is an awesome place!
