exercise 10d p. 86

Choose the best alternative for each gap.

Alem 1.arrives in England ready to see the sights with his respected and much-loved father. He's bright, interested, and brimming with 2.excitement but, above all, he feels very fortunate to be alone with his father on a trip of this enormity. They make their way from the airport to a nearby town and a peaceful, welcoming family hotel that 3.will be their base while they're away. 4.On their first full day they take the train to London. It's still 5.damp and chilly. Alem is astonished by the masses, by the glamour, by the traffic. He keeps looking around 6.in silence. Above all he loves that contrast of the old and the new, so typical of London. Alem would like to 7.earn his living as an architect when he grows up and he spends his day imagining what he'd build and where. After 8.sharing a pleasant meal, the two holidaymakers return to the hotel for some much-needed rest. With no time to wonder why his father keeps 9.reminding Alem so strongly that he must speak in English and not his native tongue, Alem settles into bed a happy child. But 10.- the next morning, Alem's father is gone and he is left alone. The hotel landlord contacts the Refugee Council and Social Services who place Alem into care, first in a children's home and later with a wonderfully caring and kind foster family.
