Roukko Primary School
Roukko School is located in the northern part of Valkeakoski, town of 22 000 inhabitants in southern Finland. Roukko has recently become the largest primary school in Valkeakoski. There are 480 pupils in grades 1-6 and 85 preschool pupils. The school house was built in 1958 and the renovation was completed in 2003. In the latest construction in 2011 the preschool and two school classes got a new wing in the school building.
The school yard is big enough for playing during the brakes. There is also a sports field next to the school house, which is frozen for ice skating during the winter. Since the school is right close to the forest, there is a possibility for cross-country skiing as well in the winter time. Nature is also taken into consideration when planning the school working days. The School gym is used by school classes, preschool and afternoon/evening groups.
ICT class has 15 laptops for pupils to use and ICT is taught simultaneously with languages, maths and science. Each classroom is equipped with a laptop, a document camera and a data projector. Some also has a smart board.
The craft lessons have separate classrooms. There are sewing machines, mechanical and electrical tools for making crafts by curriculum. The classes are split in half and the pupils follow technical or textile work in periods.
There are 20 classes and 20 full time class teachers in Roukko School. Visiting teachers are for crafts, German and French. The teachers are highly educated and motivated for their work. Roukko also has two teachers for special education and two resource teachers. The resource teachers and class teachers work together in the same classroom or they devide classes into smaller groups. Languages, maths, science and crafts are usually taught in devided groups.
Our school nurse is present four days a week. The school can also provide psychological counselling in case of need. A housekeeper, cleaners and school canteen ladies together with the principal, teachers and assistants take care of the good learning environment in Roukko School.
School lunch is served free of charge daily in the school canteen. A warm and healthy school lunch is a part of Finnish education.
Since hundreds of people work together daily n the school we regularly discuss behavior and interaction. Our aim is to teach the pupils good manners and polite behavior. Roukko School participates a national anti-bullying program called KiVa-school.
