My mother was invited by her aunt and uncle to stay for a few days at the famous haunted house. (kutsuttiin) There her uncle told her: "You have been given a special gift to see and hear things that ordinary people miss.” (on annettu) He believed that the secrets of the house would be revealed to my mother. (paljastettaisiin (reveal)) The next morning her aunt and uncle went to town and my mother decided to go for a swim. As they left, uncle turned and said, "You will be surprised at what happens, while we are away." (tulet yllättymään)

My mother went for a swim, and when she returned her towel had been stolen. (oli varastettu) Or maybe it had only been taken / had been taken  by a bird? (oli viety) She went back in to watch some TV. Almost immediately she heard some weird noise in the hall. It was like the sound of a wooden stick that was used to knock on a door. (käytettiin) My mother opened the door, but there was nobody there. When she turned, she saw an old lady with a walking stick standing in front of her holding her towel. “This must be washed”, she said and turned to the stairs. (täytyy pestä) Then she took a few steps and turned back to my mother. “Are we being followed? (seurataanko meitä) My mother shook her head and followed the old lady. My mother couldn’t believe her eyes. “Maybe this is some joke and I am being laughed at by my aunt and uncle”, she thought and looked around. (minulle nauretaan) When she looked back up, the old lady had disappeared. My mother didn’t know what to do, so she went back to watch TV.

She fell asleep and was woken up by the sound of her aunt and uncle coming back. (heräsi) She told them what had happened and her uncle was happy to hear that the old lady had been seen by my mother as well. (oli nähty) The story has been told to every visitor, except for one thing. (on kerrottu) When my mother told her uncle that she had seen the old lady, she didn’t really tell a lie. It all depends on what is meant by seeing. (tarkoitetaan) My mother did see her; in her dreams. She had fallen asleep and had dreamt the whole thing. The only thing she couldn’t explain was the towel. It had been brought inside while she was asleep. (oli tuotu)

A high school track coach Derek Herber was settling down with the scorecard the day after his (he / he’s / his) team took the Division II title by one point over Central Catholic, but something wasn’t adding up. They (They / Them / We) had beaten Central Catholic 69-68, but Herber couldn’t get their(their / they’re / there) score to 69.

“For our (we / us / our) team’s individual scoring, I (you / I / my) try to keep up with it and also try to keep the kids aware of where they (they / them / we) are individually for their (our/their/my) scoring,” Herber said. “We (You / We / They) were looking at it together, and we (we / you / they) did all the math, and then I (he / I / you) said, "Aww.” After crunching the numbers several more times with his (his / he’s / her) assistant coach and never reaching 69, Herber called the officials about their (them / their / our) mistake.

When the state officials verified a mistake had been made, Herber mailed the trophy to Central Catholic and apologized to them (their / them / us) for the mistake. He (We / You / He) needn’t have apologized. Everybody else would’ve kept their (their / his / our) mouth shut and kept the trophy, but that didn’t suit him (her / us / him).

How about you? What’s your (your / you’re / yours) opinion on the issue? What do you think you would have done yourself (myself / yourselves / yourself)?

That night we were all sitting at the table after dinner. I remember how I glanced at my parents. Dad was working on his laptop. Mum was looking at him in a funny way. For some reason she didn’t seem like her normal self. That was when I realized for the first time that something was going on. Dad looked at Mum and smiled briefly. “Shall we see what’s on TV?” Mum nodded, but didn’t move to go to the living room. She just sat there for a few minutes. Finally she got up and went to the next room and we followed her. There was a basket on the sofa and in the basket there was the cutest puppy I’d ever seen. I fell in love with it right away. My parents had promised me a puppy a long time ago, they had just been waiting for me to get older, so I could take care of it.

This is a true story; or at least one of those urban legends. You know, the ones where somebody knows someone whose cousin was there, or who knew somebody who went to school with someone else who was there. Anyways, this is what happened:

It was (oli) freezing cold. It was (oli) almost midnight on a dark January night. There was (Oli) hardly anyone out in the city; the streets were almost empty. There was (Oli) an old car parked on the corner of two streets. It was (Juuri sitä) the car people had been talking about for the past month, but nobody had ever seen who drove it or left it there. There were (Oli) stories about the car, horror stories. It was (Oli) always around Christmas that people said they saw the haunted car on the same street corner. The stories started a few years ago. It's / It is (On) funny how everything unusual always turns into an urban legend, isn't it (Eikö olekin)?

That night there were (oli) four college students walking along the street towards the car. There had been / There'd been (Oli ollut) a big party at an old warehouse but this group of friends thought it was (oli) time to go to bed. Suddenly they heard the engine starting, but there wasn't (ei ollut) anybody in the car. There was (Oli) a horrible scream behind them but as they turned to see who it was, the street was empty. Even the car had disappeared. There was (oli) only a strange fog. The students were scared and quickly ran to their dorm.

The next morning there was (oli) an article in the newspaper. Five years ago, there had been / there'd been (oli ollut) an accident at the same crossroads where they had seen the car. According to the newspaper, there had been / there'd been (oli ollut) an arrest the previous night just before midnight. The driver was finally caught. Since then there haven't been / there have not been (ei ole ollut) any stories about the strange car. But that’s just a coincidence, right?
