The olive tree is considered to be a symbol of peace, longevity and prosperity, evergreen and everlasting. During the meeting in Athens, the principal of our school had the idea of planting an olive tree in our schoolyard. We named it Erasmus olive tree and we are expecting to flourish like our project. Prokopis Adamis, teacher and Halbe Hagetams , head coordinator at...work!
Olive trees are immortal! New roots ,new trees sprout out from the old and life is going on in eternity.A symbol of peace, the olive - wreath symbolizes victory. In the Olympic Games, the only award for the winner was a wreath from the wild olive tree , a symbol of glory.
Herodotus, the Greek historian describes the following story which is relevant to the olive wreath.
Xerxes inquired some Arcadians after the battle of Thermopylae why there were so few Greek men defending the Thermopylae. The answer was"All other men are participating in the Olympic Games". And when asked "What is the prize for the winner?", "An olive-wreath" came the answer. Then one of his generals uttered: "Good heavens! Mardonius,, what kind of men are these against whom you have brought us to fight? Men who do not compete for possessions, but for Virtue ?!!!
It was true: athletes participated in the Games only for an olive wreath. They never accepted any other prize .
And let's not forget that the olive oil is the basis of the Mediterrranean diet and therefore the best ally for our good health and longevity.
