Perusopetuksen jälkeen yhteishaussa (helmi-maaliskuussa) voi hakea lukioon, ammatilliseen perustutkintokoulutukseen, tutkintokoulutukseen valmentavaan koulutukseen (TUVA) tai kansanopistojen oppivelvollisille tarkoitetuille vapaan sivistystyön linjoille.

What are the educational options after the 9th grade?

After basic education, in the joint application (February-March), you can apply to upper secondary school, vocational basic education, degree education preparatory education (TUVA) or to the non-formal educational work lines intended for compulsory education at public colleges. 

Mikä on yhteishaku?

Yhteishaku on valtakunnallinen hakujärjestelmä Suomessa, jonka kautta haetaan toisen asteen koulutukseen (9.-luokan jälkeen). Yhteishakuun osallistutaan täyttämällä sähköinen hakulomake. Lomake täytetään koulussa opinto-ohjaajan kanssa. Lomakkeeseen voi täyttää enintään viisi hakutoivetta, jotka asetetaan mieluisuusjärjestykseen. Järjestys on sitova. 

What is a joint application?

Joint application is a national application system in Finland, through which applications are made for secondary education (after the 9th grade). You participate in the joint application by filling out an electronic application form. The form is filled in at school with the student counselor. A maximum of five application requests can be filled in. The one that interests you the most is put first. The order of requests is permanent.

Miten lukioon haetaan? 

Lukioon haetaan yhteishaussa (helmi-maaliskuussa). Lukioon haettaessa peruskoulun päättötodistuksen keskiarvo on ratkaiseva.

How do you apply to high school?

You apply to high school in a joint application (February-March). When applying to highschool, the average grade of the final report card is decisive.

Mitkä kaikki oppiaineet lasketaan keskiarvoon?

Keskiarvoon ei lasketa ns. taito- ja taideaineiden (kuvataide, käsityö, kotitalous, liikunta, musiikki) arvosanoja. 

Which subjects affect the average grade?

The average grade doesn't include the grades from so called artistic and practical subjects (art, craft, home economics, physical education, music). 

Onko lukioon pääsykokeita? Tai keskiarvorajoja?

Joissakin lukioissa voi olla pääsy- ja soveltuvuuskokeita. Lukiot voivat halutessaan määrätä alarajan keskiarvolle.

Are there high school entrance exams? Or average grade limits?

Some high schools may have entrance and aptitude tests. High schools can, if they wish, set a limit for the average grade.

Onko opiskelu lukiossa ilmaista?

Lukion oppimäärän ja ylioppilastutkinnon suorittaminen on opiskelijalle maksutonta, kunnes opiskelija täyttää 20 vuotta. Lukiossa ei myöskään ole lukukausimaksuja.

Is studying in high school free?

Completing the high school curriculum and the matriculation exam is free of charge for the student until the student turns 20 years old. There are also no tuition fees in high school.

Ammattikoulu / Vocational school

Miten ammattikouluun haetaan? 

Ammattikouluun haetaan yhteishaussa (helmi-maaliskuussa). Yhteishaussa saa 6 pistettä siitä, kun on suorittanut peruskoulun (tai kymppiluokan) samana tai edellisenä vuonna. Lisäksi saa 1-16 pistettä yleisestä koulumenestyksestä, 1-8 pistettä painotettavista arvosanoista, 0-10 pistettä pääsy- ja soveltuvuuskokeesta sekä 2 pistettä ensimmäisestä hakutoiveesta.

How do you apply to vocational school?

You apply to the vocational school in a joint application (February-March). In the joint application, you get 6 points for having completed elementary school (or tenth grade) in the same or previous year. In addition, you get 1-16 points for general school success, 1-8 points for weighted grades, 0-10 points for the entrance and aptitude test, and 2 points for the first application request.

Are there entrance exams to the vocational school?

There may be entrance and aptitude tests for some lines of vocational education.
