ENA4: Society and the surrounding world 

What are the problems in the world surrounding us? How about the possible solutions? From health to crime, from politics to community service, from “perfect” to less-perfect societies, we’ll share opinions and beliefs, persuade each other, and aim at a greater understanding of the wider world and what makes it work. 

 
Platforms:
Pedanet for specific class plans, extra materials and assignments (translations, writing, listening)
Wilma for communication (alongside with Teams chat) and a quick check of homework
Teams for distance participation

Book: Insights 4, Otava (e-book)  + additional material from the teacher 

Chapters: 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 + glossaries on society and health care, crime and justice, and politics 

Grammar: modal auxiliaries, indefinite pronouns, relative pronouns and nationality words 

Wordtests: ch 2 Wed 21st October, ch 4 Wed 28th October, ch 7 Mon 9th November, ch 9 Thu 19th November (points are added directly to the course test) 

Writing: a letter to the editor (instructions Learning to learn 5. Letter to the editor) and a response to that of a peer. Deadline: your letter Monday 9th November and your response Monday 16th November. A summary on the final day. 

Listenings: 1-2 old matriculations tests + video listening(s) 

Oral exercises: all along the course, the aim at presenting and defending your view (e.g. presenting an add, a debate in small groups).

Evaluation: All areas of language competence are included. This course emphasises writing and reading comprehension skills. Oral skills and activity in class contribute approx. 30 % to the final grade. In the course test, grammar and vocabulary make about 40 % of the grade, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and writing about 20% each.  As always, it is essential all deadlines are kept and you work diligently on both the book and the given extra material as sloppyness might cause you to fail.
