Story Prompts

Story Prompts

  • The Growing Story: Write a story where each sentence must be one word longer than the previous one. Start with a two-word sentence.

  • Without Adjectives: Write about your favorite place in the world without using any adjectives. Focus on describing the feeling of being there.

  • The Dialogue-Only Story: Write a short story using only dialogue between two characters. No descriptions or actions allowed—only what they say!

  • Animal Adventure: Tell a story from the perspective of an animal, but you cannot mention what type of animal it is. Use clues in the story to reveal the animal over time.

  • Every Sentence Starts with the Same Letter: Write a short story where every sentence begins with the same letter. You choose the letter!

  • 10-Word Story: Write a complete story in exactly 10 words. Make every word count!

  • No Verbs Allowed: Write a short description of a person or place, but without using any verbs. Use nouns, adjectives, and prepositions creatively!

  • Alphabetical Sentences: Each sentence in your story must start with the next letter of the alphabet, beginning with A and going all the way to Z (or as far as you can).

  • Three-Word Story: Write a story where each sentence contains exactly three words. Be concise but tell a full narrative.

  • Dialogue in Questions: Write a conversation between two people, but every line they speak must be a question. Keep the dialogue going in this back-and-forth style.

  • Memory Chain: Write about a day in your life, but every sentence must start with "I remember…" and describe one specific detail or event.

  • The Story Without "I": Write a story about yourself or a character, but you’re not allowed to use the word "I" anywhere in the text.

  • One-Syllable Words Only: Write a story or description using only one-syllable words. Challenge yourself to create a scene or feeling with simple language.

  • Opposites: Write a story where each sentence contains an opposite idea to the previous one. For example, one sentence could be "It was a sunny day," and the next could be "Then the clouds rolled in."

  • Random Words Challenge: Write a story that includes these five random words: "pencil," "umbrella," "sandwich," "shoes," and "moon." Be sure all five words fit naturally into the story.
