1. Make sure you know the present simple and present continuous


2. Make sure you know the past simple

  • Past simple =
    • called, played
    • wentdidthoughtspoke... (the 2nd form of irregular verbs: go, went, gone
    • Notice the spelling:
      • stopped, planned
      • studied, tried
  • Negative form:
    • didn't call, didn't play, didn't go, didn't do, didn't think, didn't speak...
  • Past simple questions:
    • Did you call?
    • Didn't you call?


3. Make sure you know the past continuous

  • Past continuous= be + the ing-form of the verb
    • I / He / She / It was playing
    • We / You / They were playing
  • Negative form:
    • I / He / She / It wasn't playing
    • We / You / They weren't playing
  • Past continuous questions:
    • Was I / he / she / it playing?
    • Were we / you / they playing?

5. Make sure you know how to use present perfect


  • Present perfect =
    • I / We / You / They have played
    • He / She has played
  • Negative form:
    • I / We / You / They have played
    • He / She / It has played
  • Present perfect questions:
    • Have I / we / you / they played?
    • Has he / she / it played?

  • Make sure you know when to use present perfect: Present perfect is for something that started in the past, but isn't finished
    • I have played tennis for two years (=I still play it)
    • compare: I played tennis for two years (=I don't play it anymore)
