From Escape Rooms and Interactive Storytelling to Chatbots in the Classroom

Info and agenda for the day

You'll find most of the material (or links to the material) used here on this peda.net page I created for the purposes of this training session.

Peda.net is a Finnish learning environment/cloud storage that anyone can use free of charge. With the free account that you can create, you get free cloud storage and a personal space that you can use to create pages both for yourself or others to enjoy. By adjusting the privacy settings you can open access to other people (the default for page visibility in your own space is you only).

-----------------

The hands-on stuff for today:

1. Escape rooms on Pedanet and/or with Google Forms using virtual code locks

  • An online grammar escape room game for you to try out: https://peda.net/p/Niina%20Holopainen/escape-room-grammar (bit.ly/escapegrammar)
  • If you want to create your own escape room game, you should register on Pedanet and create the game by creating a set of pages in your own space on Pedanet -> you can register using your Google account or MS Office account
  • Try creating your own "escape room" either on Pedanet or on Google Forms

2. Interactive storytelling, escape rooms, quizzes: Thinglink
  • The teacher account is free for 30 days, but after that your school should have a paid plan
  • Create your own interactive Thinglink (the 30-day free trial)
  • You can create the images/photos for your Thinglink scenarios or tours on Microsoft Bing search (AI-generated images)
  • Another similar service is genial.ly which also has both free and paid plans

3. Code-free chatbots on landbot.io:

  • Try Niina Bot on Landbot
  • Create your own on https://landbot.io/ (register an account (email/Google/Slack), start using for free --> limited number of blocks and chats with the free account)
  • You can try to add a bit of character to your bot by thinking about how it talks, for example

4. Scavenger hunt game - seppo.io

  • GPS or no gps - the whole world can be your playground
  • The creator of the game adds a map, a story, rules and tasks to a specific location on a map (or a picture if no gps used)
  • Players/teams join using their mobile on play.seppo.io and insert a code given to them by the game master (the pin for our game: 8F7GD3)

During the game:
  • Points and awards for the players/teams for the tasks they complete
  • Feedback automatically or manually by the game master
  • Chat for questions that may arise while playing
  • Podium for those who have completed successfully
