27. Feelings and bullying

Bullying

During a normal school day, you will come across many situations where you must work together with others. You cannot always work with your best friend, and sometimes you must work with someone who you do not know or are not interested in. However, it is important to be able to work with everyone. By having an open mind, you can give other people the chance to connect with you. People are usually quite interesting once you get to know them.

The atmosphere of your classroom should be safe. This means that the classroom should be an environment where everyone can be themselves and feel secure. By dealing with problems right away makes the atmosphere of the classroom better.

Some situations can lead to opportunities for bullying. For example, when someone gives a wrong answer to a question in class, you may sometimes feel the need to laugh. However, if the class erupts in laughter at someone's expense, the person who made a mistake will feel bad and ashamed. Calling names, pushing others, and not taking others into consideration are all examples of bullying. Bullying is a serious problem, and it has terrible effects on the person who is bullied.

If you notice that someone in your class or school is being bullied, you should:

  • notify an adult of the bullying immediately,
  • take the side of the person being bullied and
  • never join in on the bullying.

If you notice that you are being bullied, you should:

  • tell the bully to stop,
  • leave the situation,
  • notify an adult immediately and
  • never take revenge because that can make you a bully, too

Feeling

Every one of us has the right to have both positive and negative feelings. Showing one's feelings is also always allowed.

There are situations when you are happy, joyful or content. At other times, you can feel scared, angry or sad. You can learn to control your feelings through practice. By doing so, you will survive difficult situations more easily.

When showing your emotions, you always run the risk of hurting other people with your words and actions. For example, it is very easy to say hurtful things to others when you are feeling angry. This is why controlling your feelings is important. By learning to take others into consideration even when you are angry or sad, you will become a more mature person that is nicer to be around with.
