The English education program for first graders - information and application

The City of Kotka is starting an English education program from the 1st grade of primary school, if enough pupils sign up for the program.

Regarding the program and application process the city department of education is arranging a briefing on Monday February 13th at 5 pm at Kotka main library (Kirkkokatu 24, 48100 Kotka). You are welcome to attend and learn more about the program.

Education in English will start in Kotka at Haukkavuori school in the city center (Kotkansaari) or in Karhula at Rauhala school providing a minimum of 20 students will sign up for the program. The English education program is primarily for pupils that live in Kotka but pupils from other municipalities can also be accepted. The pupil’s guardian is responsible for school transportation.

The program is open to pupils interested in studying in Finnish and English. English and Finnish skills are not required from applicants. If needed, the language abilities of the children will be evaluated with a reading test prior to admission. A bilingual program requires extra effort from the child and if he or she has difficulties in learning to read or write, this should be considered before starting the program. The English education program will be based on the Finnish primary school curriculum but it will be bilingual. This means, that the subjects and lesson hours will follow the same curriculum as the other primary schools in Kotka. In the English program though, the education in grades 1 and 2 will be 80 % in English and 20 % in Finnish, in 3rd and 4th grade 60 % and 40 % and in 5th and 6th grade 50 % and 50 %. In higher grades 7, 8 and 9 the education will be 25 % in English and 75 % in Finnish.

After school activities are provided according to strategy approved on 13.12.2016 by the Committee of services for children and adolescents. After school activities are organized in Finnish.
