EDLS610 Research Methods

The course EDLS 610 is a 5-ECTS course, meaning that the workload is 135 full working hours. The course consists of PowerPoint slides and video classes that comprise lectures on various topics in the field of research: philosophy of research, research paradigms, differences between quantitative and qualitative research methods, conducting qualitative research, conducting quantitative research, and writing research report/thesis.

In each session there is a reflective writing task and there may be an assignment before the lectures or after them as well. These assignments can best be documented in the reflective report, and in the workbook. The articles recommended for reading before or after the video lectures are supplementary options with the aim of opening new perspectives on the topic under discussion.

The core requirement for the students is to form their own stand on the issues presented in the video classes. When writing their reflective reports, the students are expected to express their views on the core views presented by the lecturer and on the students’ discussions. The views are supplemented by the workbook which can be parts of the thesis students are to write.
