Session 5 Culture and Organizations

The main goal for this session is to understand national culture differences. We all know that the habits, values, and cultures are very different, but sometimes it is hard to make sense of all that. In this session we learn about a famous framework developed by a Dutch researcher Geert Hofstede.

This session includes a detailed description of the Hofstede framework and its dimensions. The first dimension in the framework is social inequality, relations to authorities – power distance, which means how we relate to authorities. During the lectures we hear important examples of the power distance he has
experienced with for example some heads of states. In lecture four we continue the analyses of Hofstede’s framework of cultures with focus on masculinity-femininity dimensions. We’ll also learn about the various indicators for both masculinity and femininity.

Session five consists of five lectures, PowerPoint slides related to them, readings, individual and group assignments.
