Grieg sävelsi mieluiten pienimuotoista ja runollista musiikkia, eikä tehnyt juuri muita suuria orkesteriteoksia kuin pianokonserton. Grieg oli empinyt Ibsenin esittäessä pyynnön edellisenä vuonna mutta suostui, ja musiikista tuli Griegin kuuluisin teos.</p> <p>Alkuperäisessä näytelmämusiikissa on 26 osaa, mukana on lauluja ja kuoro-osuuksia.</p> <p>Grieg muodosti myöhemmin musiikista kaksi orkesterisarjaa, jotka ovat tunnetuimmat.
