Lecture 11 Draft report from Nigeria (MacDonald)

In Lecture 11, MacDonald introduces the Nigeria case. In Nigerian education system, some principals are in charge of both junior secondary and senior secondary schools. People perceive the principals as a part of the whole educaiton system. Thus the principal evaluation does not receive enough attention. The society requires the principals to be professional so that they can evaluate the teacher performance and lead the schools to meet their goals. Both teaching experience and qualification are needed in order to become a principal in Nigeria. Institutions such as ANCOPSS are providing seminars and workshops to the principals. These training programmes are financed by the government. The high retirement rate of the senior principals is a big challenge. Furthermore, MacDonald is calling for more public recognition to the principals as leaders.
