1 Rules of Conduct in Lohja Comprehensive Schools

The rules of conduct apply to all comprehensive schools in the City of Lohja and cover all school activities. In addition, schools may have their own separate everyday rules, such as class rules.

2 Purpose and Application of the Rules of Conduct

The purpose of the rules of conduct is to promote internal order in the school, the smooth running of studies without obstacles, and the safety and pleasantness of the school community. The rules of conduct apply to all pupils working at school during school hours.

School hours include the timetable-based school day, recesses, morning and afternoon activities, as well as school-organized trips and other events. The school area includes school buildings and yards as well as other premises and locations where teaching takes place.

At the beginning of the school year, schools go through the rules of conduct, the boundaries of the school area, and the everyday rules of the school and/or class.

3 Rights and Responsibilities of Pupils

3.1 Basic Education Act and Basic Education Decree

All pupils have an equal and non-discriminatory status, fundamental educational and human rights, and the right to a safe learning environment. Every adult and pupil working in the school is obliged to report any observed bullying, harassment, or violence.

Every pupil has the obligation to participate in teaching, complete their tasks conscientiously, and behave appropriately.

3.2 Rights of Pupils

Every pupil has the right to participate in teaching safely.
Every pupil has the right to equal and non-discriminatory treatment.
Every pupil has the right to participate in school activities and development, and to express their opinion.
Every pupil has the right to student welfare services and learning support.
Every pupil has the right to a free meal on school days.
Every pupil has the right to interpreting and assistant services and aids necessary for participation in teaching.
Every pupil has the right to free treatment for a school-related accident.
Every pupil, when the conditions are met, has the right to school transport and accommodation.

3.3 Responsibilities of Pupils

The pupil is obliged to attend teaching according to the timetable and to carefully complete tasks given by the teacher during school hours, and homework during free time.
In our school, we act with regard for our own and others’ safety and follow the instructions of school staff.
Every staff member and pupil behaves kindly, fairly, and respectfully toward others.
Pupils take others into consideration, use appropriate language, follow good manners, and give others peace to study and work.
Others must not be hit, kicked, insulted, or spoken to in a hurtful way.
In our school, no one bullies or discriminates against others. If you are bullied or notice bullying, tell a member of the school staff.

4 Safety, Comfort, and the Smooth Running of Studies

4.1 Good Behaviour

Pupils follow good manners, take others into consideration, and follow given instructions.
Pupils must dress so that they can participate in teaching safely. The teacher will give more detailed instructions on how to dress for different learning situations with safety and hygiene in mind.
AI may not be used for schoolwork without permission, nor may text or images be copied without citing the source.
Pupils must arrive on time for lessons.
It is not recommended to bring money, toys, or other items not needed for the school day, unless agreed upon with the teacher.
If toys or sports equipment are brought to school, they must be stored in the school bag/backpack, coat rack, or in another location designated by the school, and may only be used during the school day with the teacher’s permission.

4.2 Staying and Moving Around

Pupils spend recess in the designated recess area and follow recess instructions.
Pupils may not leave the school area during the school day without permission from a teacher or other school staff member.

4.3 Cleanliness and Care for the Environment

Every pupil takes care of the environment as well as the cleanliness of indoor and outdoor school premises.
Every pupil must take good care of school property and learning materials.
Pupils must remove their shoes when entering the building.
Outdoor clothing must be stored in the designated place.

4.4 Safety

For safety reasons, mopeds, bicycles, and scooters must be left in their designated outdoor areas for the school day.
On school grounds, it is forbidden to throw anything that could endanger safety (e.g., snow/snowballs or stones).
In school corridors, pupils must walk.

4.5 Substances and Dangerous Objects

Possession and use of tobacco products, nicotine products, e-cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs is prohibited.
Weapons, fire-starting tools, and other dangerous items designed to harm another person or their property are not allowed in school.

4.6 Energy Drinks, Soft Drinks, Sweets, and Other Treats

Snacks may be eaten with the teacher’s permission, at the time and place designated by the teacher.
Bringing energy drinks, sodas, sweets, chocolate, or chips to school is not recommended.
If brought to school, these items must be stored in the school bag/backpack.

4.7 Use and Storage of Phones and Other Mobile Devices

Phones or other mobile devices may not be used during lessons, recess, or meals, except for learning purposes with the teacher’s permission, or with the principal’s/teacher’s permission for personal healthcare, or as an aid under section 31 of the Basic Education Act.
Phones or other devices may not be used to photograph or film another person without permission from both the teacher and the person being photographed.
Phones and other devices may be used with the teacher’s permission if the pupil urgently needs to contact a guardian during the school day, for example due to illness.
Pupils always have the right to call the emergency number without school staff permission in an emergency.

During lessons, grades 1–4

Phones and other devices are stored during lessons as instructed by the teacher.

During lessons, grades 5–9

Phones and other devices are stored during lessons in a locked phone station located in the school administration area.
The teacher collects phones into a storage box at the start of the first lesson of the day and returns them at the end of the last lesson for the whole class. If the school day continues after this, the phone must be stored in a non-disturbing location, either in the pupil’s own locker or backpack.
Phones and devices must remain in a non-disturbing state.
A phone or device may be retrieved for use during a lesson with the teacher’s permission for health reasons, in an emergency, or if needed for the learning situation.
Pupils may be granted an exemption to use their phone during the school day for medical reasons. This exemption is handled in an individual student welfare meeting, convened by the pupil’s homeroom teacher, and recorded in the pupil’s Wilma profile as a student welfare note.

Recess, transitions, meals

During scheduled school time, pupils may not use their mobile phones.
The phone restriction applies to the entire school day, including lessons, recess, transitions, and meals.

4.8 Educational Measures, Disciplinary Actions, Safety Measures, and Other Consequences

If recommendations are not followed, the matter is discussed with the pupil and the guardian may be contacted.
If a pupil disrupts teaching or another school event, they may be ordered to leave the premises. If the disruption is unreasonable or the pupil threatens the safety of others, their right to attend lessons may be suspended for the rest of the day and the following school day.
If a pupil behaves inappropriately, they may be assigned an educational discussion. If the inappropriate behaviour continues after the discussion or is more serious, the pupil may be assigned detention. If behaviour still does not improve or is serious, the pupil may receive a written warning. The pupil may also be suspended if behaviour is extremely serious.
A prohibited item or substance, or an item/substance with which the pupil disrupts teaching or learning, may be confiscated, or the pupil’s belongings, school storage spaces under the pupil’s control, and outer clothing may be inspected to confiscate such items/substances if possession is obvious and the pupil refuses to hand them over or fails to reliably show they are not in possession.
Failure to complete homework may result in being required to complete it after the school day.
A pupil may be required to clean or reorganize school property they have dirtied or disordered intentionally or through negligence (cleaning obligation).

5 Monitoring and Review of the Rules of Conduct

These rules of conduct have been drawn up jointly by the entire school staff, pupils, and guardians.

The entire school staff and pupils commit to following these rules and to working together to promote a safe and pleasant school day.

Guardians support pupils in following the school’s rules and in ensuring a safe and pleasant school day.

The rules of conduct are available on the school’s website (Pedanet). The rules are reviewed annually with pupils and guardians are informed about them. The rules are reviewed regularly.

These rules are in effect from 1 August 2025.
