Rugby on jakautunut kahteen merkittävään erilliseen muotoon<span> </span><a href="https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_union" title="Rugby union" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">rugby unioniin</a><span> </span>ja<span> </span><a href="https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_league" title="Rugby league" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">rugby leagueen</a>, joista molemmista säännöistä on myös kehitetty omat seitsemän pelaajan joukkueilla pelattavat versionsa.</b></p> <p><b>Kaikille rugbylajeille yhteiset piirteet ovat soikeanmuotoinen pallo ja sääntö, joka kieltää pallon syöttämisen eteenpäin, jolloin palloa täytyy kuljettaa kantamalla, taaksepäin syöttämällä tai potkimalla sitä. Pisteidenteko tapahtuu kuljettamalla pallo vastustajan maaliviivan yli siten, että se koskettaa maata maalialueella (<em>try</em>), ja potkaisemalla pallo maalihaarukan läpi (<em>conversion</em>) maalipotkusta, jonka joukkue saa tryn jälkeen, pudottamalla kesken pelin pallo maahan ja potkaisemalla siitä (pudotusmaali eli<span> </span><em>dropgoal</em>) tai rangaistuspotkuista. Eri maalintekotavoista annettavat pisteet vaihtelevat lajeittain.</b></p> <p><b>Rugby unionin ja leaguen suurin ero on pelaajien määrä ja taklaustilanteet. Leaguessa pelaajia on 13 joukkuetta kohden, kun unionissa niitä on viisitoista^{<a href="https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby#cite_note-1" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">[1]</a>}.
