1) Groups of 4-6 pupils (3 against 3 or 2 against 2)

2) With your group, choose ONE OF TOPICS BELOW

3) Split in half and DECIDE WHICH TEAM YOU ARE IN
A) Affirmative team: = TWO OR THREE students (= FOR = agree with the statement)
B) Negative team = TWO OR THREE students (= AGAINST = disagree with the statement)

4) First, in your team (affirmative or negative ) of 2-3, brainstorm for arguments + write down your ideas: FOR / AGAINST (depending on your team)

Remember, this is an exercise - you DO NOT have to give your REAL OPINION and you are free to EXAGGERATE to make your point!

5) Then start writing the script for the debate TOGETHER with your opposing team (= writing down notes for each speaker). See below: Structure of the debate

6) Have a "practice debate" with your opponents

7) Perform the actual debate in front of the class

Structure of the debate:

Team A = The affirmative team = You support/defend the original statement (= the resolution)

Team B: The negative = opposing team = You argue against the original statement (= the resolution)

Example of turns of speech (can be longer, if needed):
1) Team A:
Team member 1: Opening statement: presenting your team's main viewpoint = resolution BRIEFLY!
2) Team B:
Team member 1: Opening statement: presenting your team's main viewpoint = resolution BRIEFLY!
3) Team A:

Team member 2: Counterargument = Rebuttal (= kiistäminen) + argument(s) to defend your standpoint/views
5) Team A:

6) Team B:
Team member 3: Rebuttal of team A:s counterargument(s) + more evidence in favour of your opinion
