NB!!! 80 per cent attendance is required on this course. In plain English it means that you are allowed to be absent twice. If you are absent more, you must come to talk with the teacher. The third time is negotiatable, but that’s it - more or less.

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE:

This course is an oral course. The basic material is found in the book (NEW INSIGHTS MODULE 8). We shall start with situations we encounter every day such as introducing ourselves, talking about ourselves, talking about our special fields of interest, talking about our jobs and studies. Then we shall move on today’s news and media. Other themes that we shall deal with on the course are culture in its various forms, health and well-being, society around us, politics, economy, science and technology, environment, nature conservation, recycling, sustainable development, multicultural issues and our global village, development aid, warfare and peace missions. If any studentis willing to give an oral presentation on any topic in class, she / he will be more thanwelcome to do that.

We shall also pay attention to pronunciation, stress and intonation as well as communication and compensation strategies and active listening.

We shall meet 11 (eleven) times on Mondays through Thursdays at 17.00 – 18.20 in classroom 31 or simultaneously online on GoogleMeet at least till April 4^th as follows:

The oral exam will be organized on Thursday, December 12^th, 2024. The oral exam has three parts: I Reading aloud and commenting on the text, II Summarizing the text in English and conversation on the topic, and III Debating and defending your side of the story.

You will be given a mock exam so that you can see how the oral exam is structured.

An extract from Mr Al Gore’s Nobel Lecture on 10 December 2007 when he received the Nobel Prize for Peace 2007 in Oslo

”So today, we dumped another 70 million tons of global-warming pollution into the thin shell of atmosphere surrounding our planet, as if it were an open sewer. And tomorrow, we will dump a slightly larger amount, with the cumulative concentrations now trapping more and more heat from the sun.

As a result, the earth has a fever. And the fever is rising. The experts have told us it is not a passing affliction that will heal by itself. We asked for a second opinion. And a third. And a fourth. And the consistent conclusion, restated with increasing alarm, is that something basic is wrong.

We are what is wrong, and we must make it right.

Last September 21, as the Northern Hemisphere tilted away from the sun, scientists reported with unprecedented distress that the North Polar ice cap is ”falling off a cliff.” One study estimated that it could be completely gone during summer in less than 22 years. Another new study, to be presented by U.S. Navy researchers later this week, warns it could happen in as little as 7 years. Seven years from now.”

An extract from Mr Martti Ahtisaari’s Nobel Lecture on 10 December 2008 when he received the Nobel Prize for Peace 2008 in Oslo

”I too was a child affected by a war. I was only two years old when, as a result of an agreement on spheres of interest between Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Union, war broke out, forcing my family to leave soon thereafter the town of Viipuri. Like several hundred thousand fellow Karelians, we became refugees in our own country as great power politics caused the borders of Finland to be redrawn and left my home town as part of the Soviet Union. This childhood experience contributed to my commitment to working on the resolution of conflicts.

Wars and conflicts are not inevitable. They are caused by human beings. There are always interests that are furthered by war. Therefore those who have power and influence can also stop them.

Peace is a question of will. All conflicts can be settled, and there are no excuses for allowing them to become eternal. It is simply intolerable that violent conflicts defy resolution for decades causing immeasurable human suffering, and preventing economic and social development.

The most challenging peace-building project ahead of us is finding a solution to the conflicts in the Middle East, which have continued for decades. The tensions and wars in the region have been going on for so long that many have come to believe that the Middle East knot can never be untied. I do not share this belief.”

PART II Suomenkielisen tarinan tuottaminen englanniksi ja keskustelu (kysyminen ja vastaaminen)

LIITO-ORAVA (= a flying squirrel)

Yli viisikymmentä vuotta sitten lapsuuttaan viettäneet muistavat lähes poikkeuksetta kertoa kotinsa pihapiirissä tai lähimetsissä kohtaamistaan "siipioravista" eli liito-oravista (Pteromys volans). Samaan hengenvetoon useimmat toteavat, että eipä niitä ole enää vuosikymmeniin näkynyt.

Aika toki kultaa muistot. Tietoa liito-oravakannan taantumisesta tukevat kuitenkin myös riistatiedustelujen yhteydessä vuosittain kerätyt havainnot tai paremminkin havaintojen väheneminen vuodesta toiseen. Liito-oravakannan kehitys on ollut vähenevä 1940-luvulta lähtien, ja kannan arvioidaan vielä pienenevän tulevaisuudessa.

Suomen metsäluonnossa on tapahtunut vastaavana aikana huomattava muutos. Tehokkaan metsätalouden seurauksena kolopuut ovat lähes kadonneet. Metsät on muutettu tasaikäisiksi, usein yhtä puulajia kasvaviksi. Liito-oravan elintila on siten kaventunut. Liito-orava luokitellaan Suomessa uhanalaiseksi, vaarantuneeksi lajiksi. Vuosina 2003-2005 tehdyn ympäristöministeriön rahoittaman kartoitustyön mukaan Suomessa elää noin 143 000 naaraspuolista liito-oravaa.

Suomi on Viron ohella ainoa EU-maa, jossa liito-oravaa esiintyy. EU:n luontodirektiivin mukaan se on yhteisön tärkeänä pitämä laji, jonka suojelutaso tulee säilyttää suotuisana. Suomen lainsäädännössä se on otettu huomioon niin, että liito-oravan selvästi havaittavan lisääntymis- ja levähdyspaikan hävittäminen tai heikentäminen on luonnonsuojelulain 49 § mukaan kiellettyä.

Tärkeimpänä syynä liito-oravakannan supistumiseen pidetäänkin liito-oraville sopivien varttuneiden kuusisekametsien hakkuita, ja niiden myötä liito-oraville sopivien metsien pinta-alan vähenemistä. Arvioidaan, että pinta-ala pienenee edelleen lähitulevaisuudessa. 1960-luvulta lähtien aukoiksi hakatut metsät eivät ole vielä vuosikymmeniin sopivia liito-oravalle.

NAALI (= an arctic fox)

Naali (Alopex lagopus) eli napakettu on asustellut vuosisatojen ajan Fennoskandian tunturivyöhykkeellä. Viimeisten vuosikymmenten aikana naali on kuitenkin vähentynyt rajusti koko Fennoskandiassa.

Naali on kettua pienempi, vain 3-5 kiloa painava koiraeläin. Sen turkki on kesäisin selkäpuolelta tumma ja talvella vitivalkoinen.

Naalin reviirin koko määräytyy ravintotilanteen perusteella. Naali tulee sukukypsäksi jo ensimmäisenä elinvuotenaan ja on pääsääntöisesti yksiavioinen. Naaras synnyttää toukokuun loppupuolella tavallisesti 3-12 poikasta, mutta voi saada kerralla jopa 19 poikasta. Kuolleisuus on kuitenkin suuri sekä poikasten että aikuisten keskuudessa. Aikuisikään selvinneiden naalien keskimääräinen elinikä on vain kolme vuotta.

Naali on Suomen uhanalaisin nisäkäs. Vuoden 2001 arvion mukaan naaleja oli maassamme 10-20 yksilöä, vuonna 2004 yksittäisiä eläimiä havaittiin vain kahdeksan. Hälyttävää on, että yhtään naalin pesintää ei ole havaittu Suomessa sitten vuoden 1995. Tilanne on huono myös Ruotsissa ja Norjassa. Vuonna 2004 havaittiin koko Fennoskandiassa vain 14 naalipoikuetta.

Vuosisadan vaihteessa valkoinen naalinturkki oli suurinta muotia, ja liiallinen pyynti romahdutti kannan muutamassa vuosikymmenessä. Naali rauhoitettiin vuonna 1940, jonka jälkeen valkoturkin uhkana on ollut ravintotilanteen huononeminen. Jyrsijöiden huippumäärät loistavat poissaolollaan, ja suurpetojen harvinaistuttua naalille jää vähemmän haaskoja. Naalin ravinnonsaantia ovat vaikeuttaneet myös muutokset poronhoidossa. Lisäksi pohjoiseen levittäytynyt kettu paitsi kilpailee naalin kanssa ruoasta, myös valtaa naalin pesiä sekä napsii naaleja ja erityisesti niiden poikasia saaliikseen

To recycle or not?

Student A

You have very strong opinions on the importance of leading an environmentally friendly lifestyle. You find it extremely hard to understand people who seem to care less about recycling. You see your fellow student throw away something that you consider recyclable. You can’t just let it be so; you decide to bring up the topic with him / her.

Student B

You think that concern for the environment easily tends to go too far. People do not stay calm and moderate; they just go into extremes. You feel that recycling is not your cup of tea, but yet a fellow student of yours decides to comment on you throwing away something that he / she feels could be recycled.

Cover at least the following topics:

Exchange of different opinions on recycling (What items at least ought to be recycled?)
