I grew up in a monolingual family. My parents speak only Finnish, and in my childhood
I had very few real-life experiences with any other language.

However, I spent countless hours online from early on, and the online community
I was part of used English. In order to interact with strangers, I had to start using English as well.

I was uncomfortable at first about how it would play out or if I would fail because I wasn’t a native
speaker. But despite my fears, everything went smoothly.

Over the years, I’ve become friends with a lot of people from all around the world. Finnish may be my first language, but a percentage of my identity is definitely English-speaking.

Ubuntu is an inclusive term roughly translated as "human kindness." It is an idea from Africa which literally means engaging in "human-ness" or kind behaviour and is often translated as "humanity toward others". It is often used in a more philosophical sense to mean "the belief in a universal bond of sharing considered to connect all humanity". Since the transition to democracy in South Africa with the Nelson Mandela presidency in 1994, the term has increased its popularity and has become more widely known outside Southern Africa. While marginalization and harassment tend to be unfortunately popular in today's society, Ubuntu raises spirits and increases matters our overall wellbeing.

Step 1.

Listen to Tim telling you about his day. Underline all the verbs in the simple past or in the past continuous.

My day started early and luckily ended early, too. First, I went to visit a friend I hadn’t seen in ages and who lives alone out in the country. I arrived and found the front door unlocked but no one was at home. I entered the kitchen and helped myself to some food. Then a family I had never seen before came in, and I realized it wasn’t my friend’s house! You should have seen how they were smiling like crazy and laughing their heads off!

Step 2.

Continue listening. Write down all the verbs in the past tense. Next, compare your list with that of your partner. Then tell your partner what happened to you yesterday. Was your day any better than Tim’s?

Later the same day I discovered how pathetically introverted I am when I was going to the supermarket with my family by car. We were listening to the radio and I called out from the back seat: “I really like this song!” My parents gasped because they had forgotten I was sitting in the back seat. And I’m their only child! I’m really appalled!

In the afternoon, while I was doing my job as a cart clerk and feeling exhausted, a gentleman went around the parking lot and picked up some trash. I think he was trying to help out or something. Faith in humanity: +1!. About an hour later I saw a woman pick a bug off her windshield and eat it. What?! Faith in humanity: -200!

Yesterday was my girlfriend’s birthday. To celebrate, I spent the day with her and then took her out for a really nice dinner. Wow, I really have this “I’m a great boyfriend thing covered,” I remember saying to myself. Sigh! She is currently giving me the silent treatment because I didn’t write “happy birthday” on her Facebook wall. She says I forgot her birthday!

Samu: Has there ever been a phase in your life when you’ve been the bullied or the bully?

Conor: I think everyone as a kid has had some experience, major or minor, of being bullied and it’s almost a passage or something that we go through. But I actually do have recollections of me actually being the bully and I feel obviously very bad about it now, but at the time sometimes you don’t even realize it. And I remember, when I was in the second grade, we had an art project – ‘cause we were learning about spiders – and so we had to make a spider web out of glitter and make all the circles then run stripes and make it look like a spider and then I placed a little spider on. I remember working really hard on mine and wanting to be the best in the class, ‘cause the teacher would always hang in the best spider webs. And I walked over to this one kid making a spider web and I said: “Your spider web looks really bad,” and I walked away and the kid was just bawling and crying and I felt really bad and I do apologize to him. It just kind of reminds me of how sometimes we can unintentionally be the bully.

Samu: Yeah, exactly, like looking back on my childhood, there have been many cases where I’ve been kind of indirectly bullying someone. Not necessarily being the primary bully, but more of a bystander, just kind of not standing up for the person being bullied, and just kind of trying to ignore it and say “okay, at least that’s not me.” I think that’s one of the biggest problems.

Conor: I think that kind of responds to this complex of “as long as I’m not being bullied it’s okay”. You see that in big groups and there’s always that one agitator, who’s really leading the bullying. And then there are the kids who either kind of play along a little bit or they just distance themselves. I think that that’s just as bad or maybe worse, just because all through your life you’re gonna meet all these kinds of people – some good people – and you’ll meet people who’ll get their self esteem and kind of their pleasure from making others feel bad about themselves. You’re gonna meet those people in your life, but what disappoints at least me more is seeing people who have the power to step up and say “stop it,” and then just let it happen.

Samu: What do you think a person being bullied should do? You see these videos on YouTube, like the person being bullied standing up for the bully and for themselves and then fighting back in a physical kind of way. But is that necessarily the best way or should they kind of go to a teacher and try to solve it through?

Conor: It’s a tough question because bullying just deals with such- all mental isolation to it and that feeling of being really alone. I think the best thing to do is, obviously you should go to teachers and adults, and that’s not always gonna help. It might actually hurt in some cases. I can give you, going to your friends and try to get people to stand up for you, is helpful. But I think if, there is nothing you can do about it, I think sometimes fighting back and physical retaliation can be the answer if there’s nothing else you can do.

Samu: It might kind of break the deadlock, and you might find yourself actually looking forward to going to school, other than everyday being kind of alone, going battling…

Conor: I had a friend who I went to high school with and in middle school he was bullied constantly for years. He tried to do what everyone told him to, which is to go to teachers, like “people need to stand up for you, Matthew” – it was his name. One day he just – nothing stopped, the bullying was endless, he couldn’t avoid it – and one day he stood up and he punched the kid in the face and broke a few of his teeth and broke his nose and fractured a part of his jaw. That’s obviously like the most extreme you’re really gonna hear, but I think that sometimes we have to bring it to ourselves to stand up forourselves. Because we are the ones being bullied.

Samu: Exactly.

Dear readers of my blog, you’ll never believe what an awful trip I 1. had (oli) last Saturday on my moped! Nicole: So you’re actually headed off to college now. Are you excited to be living on your own? What are your feelings about that?

Leea: Well, it makes me really happy to finally get out from home and to start my own routine really, but also I’m going to be living in the dorm for the first year and I’m gonna have a roommate, but I think definitely- I’ve always been very independent, especially for the past few years, like I just take care of my own stuff, and just kind of solve everything on my own. So I think I could already live on my own in an apartment, like I would be fine. Maybe I’d miss my mom’s cooking or something and my dog. But I’m definitely looking forward to it.

Nicole: I think that’s the one thing that would be the most challenging for me. If I were to live on my own, I would die of starvation because I cannot cook at all, I literally burn water, it’s ridiculous.

Leea: How? No one knows…

Nicole: I don’t even know how I do it. But I think living on your own, it’s a big step, you’re like stepping into adulthood.

Leea: Yeah I know. But are you looking forward to it?

Nicole: I am. ‘Cause, you know, I’m also going to be living in a dormitory with a roommate. So you’re not completely by yourself, you still have that comfort of-

Leea: And someone else is going through the same thing.

Nicole: Exactly, exactly. And I mean you can always visit but I think, it’s a big stage in your life, a big step in your life, to get out there and not always rely on your parents. Which is scary, but I mean, definitely…

Leea: What do you think is going to be most like, the bestest thing, about living alone? Is it just going to be freedom? ‘Cause for me at least, it’s definitely just having my own schedule, not having to depend on anyone else.

Nicole: I think, since I was little, my parents were always super strict on bedtimes. Like, I’m seventeen years old, and at 9.30 they will be asking me when I’m going to bed. It is literally… I mean they're so concerned about how much sleep I’m getting. So I think, not having that constant like “Oh hey, are you going to bed yet?” is gonna be something I’m looking forward to. Even if it’s like staying up till like eleven… It’s a big deal.

Leea: Yeah, but that might be something that you then have to learn to do yourself. You’re like “Oh okay it’s already twelve, I really need to sleep now.”

Nicole: That’s probably what’s going to happen. I’m gonna end up passing out at eight o’clock anyway.

Leea: But would you prefer to live on your own, for example, like let’s say when you finish university, would you want to live alone for a year or would you want to have a roommate?

Nicole: That’s a good question. I think a roommate. I just can’t really imagine myself living alone, especially if I’m living in a big city, you know I’d have some comfort in someone being there and having somebody to talk to in the middle of the night. What about you? Would you want to live alone?

Leea: I’m torn, because I think I would be really difficult, like choosy and picky about a roommate. ‘Cause they’d have to be really trustworthy and have all these like criteria. But then also I think that I would just really like living alone, ‘cause I like having my own space – and like I’ve said before – I have my own routine, and I know how everything would work. But then if there was someone else messing it up for me, I’d be annoyed. I don’t know, I think it’s like having a roommate is something that you should experience and still do, like while you’re young.

Nicole: Yeah, exactly.

Renting a flat can be expensive as I have recently found out. You'll have lots of regular costs once you leave home: rent, insurance, utility bills like water and electricity, phone, internet, food, transport and entertainment - I mean going out with your friends, eating out in restaurants and so on, just to give you an idea. Some of these costs may be included in your rent, so make sure you find out what is included and what you need to pay yourself. //1

You also need to consider the costs of moving: moving company fees or costs of hiring a moving truck or a van, deposit, fees for phone, internet, water and electricity, parking permits, furniture and furnishings, linen and kitchenware, and the list goes on. House sharing is one of the easiest ways to save money when you move out. For example, I decided to split my rent and household expenses for a four-bedroom house with three other flatmates, it was cheaper than renting a one-bedroom unit by myself. If you're sharing a flat, you should set some ground rules with your flatmates. You need to discuss how you will share the cost of rent, food and other bills, how you will divide the household chores and what you will do when somebody wants to move out. When you have planned ahead, you’ll be more likely to stay friends with your roommates. // 5
