Luonnonmaantieteen on tyypillisesti ajateltu jakautuvan neljään osa-alueeseen: geomorfologiaan, biogeografiaan, klimatologiaan ja hydrogeografiaan, sekä niiden lisäksi usein myös soveltavampaan ympäristötutkimukseen.
