1. According to a UK based report, as much as half of the world’s food is wasted / gets wasted.
Britanniassa tehdyn tutkimuksen mukaan jopa puolet maailman ruuasta haaskataan.

2. It was said in the report that the waste was (being) caused by poor storage, strict sell-by dates, bulk offers and consumer fussiness.
Raportissa sanottiin, että haaskauksen aiheuttivat huono säilytys, tiukat merkinnät viimeisestä myyntipäivästä, isot tarjouspakkaukset ja kuluttajien nirsoilu.

3. The study also found that up to 30% of vegetables in the UK were not harvested because of
their physical appearance; they weren’t considered pretty enough.
Tutkimus osoitti myös, että jopa 30% Britannian vihanneksista ei korjattu talteen (harvest) niiden ulkonäön takia; niitä ei pidetty riittävän kauniina.

4. It suggested that half the food which was bought in Europe and the US was thrown / got thrown away.
Raportin mukaan puolet siitä ruuasta, joka ostettiin Euroopassa ja Yhdysvalloissa, heitettiin pois.

5. Dr Fox, head of energy and environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said: ”The amount of food that is wasted and lost around the world is staggering.”

6. This is food that could be used to feed the world’s growing population, as well as those in
hunger today.

7. It is also an unnecessary waste of the land, water and energy resources that were used in the production, processing and distribution of this food.

8. 550 billion cubic metres of water were being used to grow crops that were never eaten.
