To play this cards games for kids you simply need playing cards (ex. UNO cards or... actually, any deck will work.)

In a nutshell:

Each player begins with 5 cards in front of them, facing up

The first (youngest) player makes any pairs they can from their 5 cards. Next, that first player makes any pairs they can with the addition of the second player's cards. When no more pairs can be made, it is the second player's turn.

The second player chooses cards from the deck until s/he has 5 cards. S/he makes any pairs s/he can, and then makes any pairs s/he can with the addition of the first player's cards...

Continue until no more pairs can be made. Students need to be able to say the names of the numbers in ENGLISH (but they can get help by asking). The next player can NOT take their turn until the first player has finished naming the pairs of numbers in English.

You can simplify this game by only using the cards with numbers from 1-5 or whatever. To avoid confusion, pull out all specialty cards such as: draw two, skip a turn, or aces, jacks, queens, and kings from regular card decks before you begin.

As a review, have the players put the pairs in order from lowest to highest, naming them as they go.

This book is based on a rhyme written by Olive A Wadsworth. It has vocabulary to practice animals found in a meadow and numbers one through ten words that rhyme with these numbers. Teach students the following actions that go along with the words in the book/song.

Read through the book slowly, teaching students the following movements.

"Dig!" said the mother. (Use your hands to make a scooping/digging motion, as if you had flippers.)
"Swim!" said the mother. (Put your hands together in front of you and sway them back and forth to simulate a fish swimming.)
"Sing!" said the mother. (Place a hand on your chest, and reach the other hand out in to the air, as if you're singing.)
"Dive!" said the mother. (Put both hands together and point down as you bow your head, as if you're going to plunge into the water.)
"Buzz!" said the mother. (Put your hands to your sides and quickly flap your fingers to simulate a buzzing bee's wings.)
"Caw!" said the mother. (Put your arms out to your sides as if you're a crow flapping your wings, and make one "caw" sound.)
"Chirp!" said the mother. (Rub your hands and arms together.)
"Bask!" said the mother. (With head upturned, spread your arms out, palms up, to welcome the sun.)
"Croak!" said the mother. (Croak like a frog and make a little stationary jump as you croak once.)
"Shine!" said the mother. (Throw your fingers open in front of you, to simulate a flashing light.)

Practice numbers up to ten! Here's a printable to reinforce these numbers.

Replay “Ten Apples Up On Top!”. This time stop and count apples on some of the pages. Use terms more than, fewer than, large, larger, largest.

You can have some nice discussions about the book and try some of these activities too!

Talk about balancing things on heads
Show a few pictures of people from other cultures who carry items by balancing them on their heads. Talk about why they do that.
Try balancing pencils on fingers
Let the students try walking with a book on their heads
Put balancing toys in the science experiment center, or have them try stacking toys. My kids always loved seeing who could make the tallest tower with their Brio blocks!

Another activity could be "Counting 10 Apples." You'll need 10 Duplo or Lego blocks (as the 'apples'). For a competitive twist, add a die and grab 10 more blocks for another player. Take turns rolling the die and adding that many apple blocks to a tower. First to 10, wins!

HOW TO PLAY

This is a simple game for 2-4 players (or teams), played on the board with picture and word clues, and some special squares (e.g. Go ahead two spaces).

Decide who starts and who comes next.
Take a turn by flipping a coin (heads = move 1 space; tails = move 2 spaces).
When you land on the picture, you have to greet the cock. To do this, use the phrases from the game board (Good morning, Good afternoon or Good evening).
If your answer is correct, don't move.
If your answer is wrong, move back one space.
The winner is the first player to reach the finish.
