Kortesuo Daycare Centre (ages 3-6)
Kortesuo Daycare has been providing CLIL for its children since 1999. CLIL in Kortesuo can be described as ‘Playing in English’ through the use of routines, songs, stories and rhymes. The children gain confidence through hearing and interacting through English. These positive experiences add to the children’s natural enthusiasm and readiness to think in English, e.g. problem-solving, making connections, as they enter primary school.
Kortepohja Elementary School (grades 1-6)
Kortepohja School was one of the earliest pioneers in Finland starting CLIL in 1991. CLIL in Kortepohja can be described as ’Being in English’ and continues to build the confidence of young learners through regular exposure to English in non-threatening contexts. During primary school CLIL, learners gain basic subject vocabulary and communication skills through subject teaching in English. These experiences add to the range and depth of exposure the pupils have of English, and support the idea of English as a tool for learning and communicating.
Viitaniemi School (grades 7-9)
CLIL in Viitaniemi School got off to a fresh start in 2009 and can be characterised as ‘Learning through English’ with greater emphasis being placed on the learning of the subject in the lower secondary school. Confidence-building remains a key goal, with additional focus on the development of subject-related vocabulary, critical thinking, and conceptual understanding in addition to the development of more general language skills. The introduction of CLIL in, for example, science-based subjects offers the opportunity for students to become acquainted with practical activities first in English, leading to more theoretical subject matter in grade 9.
Jyväskylän Lyseon lukio
Upper General Secondary School (grades 10-12): The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)-based teaching began in the Lyseo in 2001. The programme emphasises ‘Studying through English’ and is divided into three academic years. The studies of the first pre-Diploma year are mainly in accordance with the Finnish national curriculum. This pre-Diploma year provides a supportive context in order to support thinking through English and developing extensive vocabulary and productive language skills with the aim of mastering subject-specific terminology and establishing a solid basis for further academic study through English. During the two remaining years the students follow the IBDP curriculum. The IBDP provides a solid basis for academic study through English.
