Background

Upper secondary schools around the area of Tampere form a network, which comprises Valkeakoski, Kangasala, Lempäälä, Nokia, Pirkkala, Pälkäne and Ylöjärvi. The schools have numerous international friendship schools, and the basic idea is that each school in Finland and abroad could benefit from all the contacts these schools have, not only from their own. Therefore European School Network programme was launched at the beginning of the school year 2007/2008 Valkeakoski Upper Secondary School acting as the coordinator.

Goals

The goal of this programme is to develop a practical and reliable model for international contacts in the network schools. If succeeded, the programme could provide a possibility for student exchanges for many years to come. This kind of programme would also strengthen cooperation between parents and teachers, and hopefully it would improve the attractiveness of the schools among parents.

Activities

• Each school chooses a coordinator who takes care of all practical arrangements between the schools in question. If need be, the cooperating schools can sign an official contract.
• The coordinating school designs a web site for information and coordination.
• The 1st Annual European School Network Seminar will be held in one of the Central European network schools in April 2008.
• Later, if possible, a coordinator for all the schools should be nominated.

Students must fill out a special application form.
• They are willing to take part in the exchange programme; they are well-behaved and succeed well in their studies.
• They are free to choose any school or country they like among the network contacts.
• They travel to the target country either alone, in small groups (2-5 persons) without a teacher, or in larger groups with one or more teachers.
• The stays last from seven days to two months.
• Students stay with host families abroad and in doing so they also commit themselves to receiving a student in their own home in return (one-to-one exchange).
• Host families provide meals for the student.
• Students pay for travel expenses themselves.
• Travel insurances are highly recommended.
• Students must attend lessons regularly during their stay and/or study courses independently according to their individual timetable.
• Students are under the regulations of both schools during their stay.
• After the stay students write a report and fill in an assessment form.
• Parents of minor students give their consent by signing the application form (major students don’t need their parents’ consent).
