Esko's farewell party spring 2006

TO ADMINISTRATION >>

Long-time School Staff Member Retires

Esko Sirjola , who has taught Biology and Geography in Ivalo Upper Secondary School for decades, will soon retire from his teaching post. Although his actual retirement will take place in August, he will not have lessons after the fourth period. Mr Sirjola, a colourful personality and an experienced teacher, has been an inspiration to many generations of students – he has even taught the offspring of some of his former pupils. He is also an eager nature-lover, photographer and a member of the Men’s Choir of Ivalo.
The sophomores held a farewell party to Mr Sirjola, who is one of their favourite teachers, on the fourth of April as a part of their Good Manners-course. The Educational Centre of Sámi Area was kind enough to provide the facilities, the three-course lunch and trainee waiters for this occasion. At first the honour guest was nowhere to be seen, as he had went to a school in Inari (40 km from Ivalo) instead of the actual place due to a minor misunderstanding. Emotions ran high as both students and Esko made speeches and gifts were presented.
Mr Sirjola's colleagues, the members of his choir and representatives of the community held a separate event to honour him on Friday the 7th.
