Improving Access to Education and Employment Opportunities for the Roma National Minority in Croatia

What is this project?

This Phare 2005 project is implemented by the Government Office for National Minorities in Croatia, with expertise of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, along with the Education and Teacher Training Agency, Roma NGOs and regional/local self/governments’ representatives.The project purpose is better inclusion of Roma children into primary education. The project started in January 2008, and it will last one year.
 

Project Activities

The program activities will take place within four basic components.

1. Support to the development of a training program for Roma teaching assistants.
The project supports the development of a training program for Roma teaching assistants at pre-school and primary school education. A manual will be prepared for future trainers in this program. The training will become obligatory for all newly employed teachers and teaching assistants in the education of Roma children.
The aim of the training is to contribute to harmonization of the work of teachers and teaching assistants in the classroom, and it will focus on strengthening their capacities and skills related to working with children with specific language and social competencies, developing their communication skills with both Roma children and parents, and getting a better insight into the Roma culture and tradition.

2. Seminars for parents, members of the Roma national minority.
A training program will be elaborated to enhance understanding of the importance of education and the role that parents should play in it. The module will focus on activities contributing to the strengthening of parents-school relations, improvement of Croatian language skills, and support to parental care.

3. Improvement to quality management and cooperation of stakeholders in education.
A model will be created and training conducted on quality assurance mechanisms related to Roma pre-school and primary school education, roles of stakeholders in that process, using also examples of European good practice.

4. Contribution to the positive visibility of Roma national minority and creating conditions for successful integration .
The fourth project component will contribute to the creation of a positive image of the Roma national minority by bringing information on Roma success stories and achievements, thus creating conditions for successful integration.
